Hope poems are versatile enough to experiment with various genres and writing styles, and we want to show you that writing a piece is much easier than you think.

Why Hope Poems Are So Special

It’s easy to mistake “hope poems” for poetry that is always cheerful and upbeat, but we think these inspirational verses should not shy away from exploring pain and heartache. A strong hope poem tells the truth about fear and loss, but also pivots to believing in a better future. This theme makes for some powerful imagery in writing. We also understand what vulnerable topics the theme opens up, and that it takes bold writers to lay their hearts bare on the page. The great news is that everyone has what it takes to write honestly this way, and we believe you have it in you, too! You can get registered now to start your journey

A Litany for Survival by Audre Lorde

Audre Lorde was a US activist at the forefront of several causes, and she used poetry and essays to aid in the fight against injustice and oppression. Despite the danger, she bravely used her voice to call out systemic issues, often urging others to do the same. A popular poem Lorde wrote was “A Litany for Survival”. In this poem, she addresses how many people are “standing upon the constant edges of decision” and that the “passing dreams of choice” are a privilege not everyone can indulge in. From birth, many are forced into survival mode and always put that instinct first. She includes herself in this “fearful” group, with verses like,

“For those of us
who were imprinted with fear
like a faint line in the center of our foreheads
learning to be afraid with our mother’s milk
for by this weapon
this illusion of some safety to be found
the heavy-footed hoped to silence us”

But her poem doesn’t stop at freezing in fear. She notes that while we are desperate to survive, none of us will survive life anyway, since we all die. In her eyes, it’s better to stop fearing and speak up. Her poem concludes with hope and resolution,

“and when we speak we are afraid
our words will not be heard
nor welcomed
but when we are silent
we are still afraid

So it is better to speak
remembering
we were never meant to survive.

This poem gives people hope because it names a terror we all have, and shows us that regardless of this existential fear, we can use our voice to make a difference.

Why Hope Poems Help Beginner Writers

If you’re new to poetry, the themes of hope and optimism for the future are a great place to work from, and here are three reasons why:

  1. You can keep your hope poems short and focused. A small “canvas” reduces pressure and makes it easier to finish your piece.
  2. They help you build skills fast. You can use plenty of wordplay and literary devices to improve week by week.
  3. They connect you to others when you enter competitions like the AVBOB Poetry Project. This is because you add your poem to a national conversation on hope, which means joining thousands of writers also reaching for the light.
