• Choose the Tone: Decide if you want your poem to be sombre, light-hearted, or even a mixture of different emotions. Setting the tone beforehand can give you helpful direction.
• Be Honest: There’s no need for flowery language or forced rhymes. You can write as if you’re talking to the departed, or as though you’re sharing a story about them with someone close to you, since authenticity means much more to people.
• Use Symbols from Nature: Nature often provides beautiful metaphors that can powerfully evoke emotion. Still waters, steadfast mountains, or flowers that bloom where they are planted are great examples.
• End with a Hopeful thought: A closing line or verse that expresses hope, love, or an enduring memory helps leave those listening with a comforting sense of closure.
